Meta tag checker

The Meta Tag Checker is a free tool from Ergora for site owners that reads a page's title, description, headings and search meta tags and flags anything missing or the wrong length.

Enter a page address. We read its title, description, headings and the meta tags that decide how it shows in search, and flag anything missing or the wrong length.

Free, no sign-up. We fetch public pages only and store nothing.

What this checks

  • The title tag, with its length against the 30 to 60 character guide
  • The meta description, with its length against the 70 to 160 character guide
  • How many H1 headings the page has, when it should have exactly one
  • The viewport tag that lets the page work on phones
  • A noindex in the meta robots tag that would keep the page out of Google
  • Whether a canonical tag is set

This is what Google shows

The title and meta description are the headline and summary people read in the search results. Get them right and more people click; leave them missing and Google writes its own, often from the first text it finds on the page.

Small tags, quick wins

Most meta problems are a minute's work once you can see them: a title that is too long to show in full, a missing description, two H1s, or a noindex left behind from a staging site that is quietly keeping the page out of Google.

Questions

How long should a title tag be?

Aim for 30 to 60 characters. Shorter wastes the space; longer and Google usually truncates it in the results. Put the most important words first in case it is cut.

Do meta descriptions affect rankings?

Not as a ranking factor, but a clear description lifts the click-through rate, which matters. Google often rewrites it to match the search, so treat it as a strong suggestion rather than a guarantee.

Can a page have more than one H1?

HTML5 technically allows it, but one clear H1 per page remains the safe, conventional choice. It tells readers and search engines what the page is about in one line.

What does a noindex tag do?

It tells Google not to show the page in search. That is right for thank-you and admin pages, but a problem when it is left on a page you want to rank. This check flags it because it overrides everything else.

Is the meta keywords tag worth adding?

No. Google has ignored meta keywords for well over a decade, and filling it in can hand your target terms to competitors who read your source. Leave it out.
